I remember watching women struggle to walk in high-heeled shoes. I remember women talking about how their feet hurt at the end of the day after wearing high-heels for several hours. Why do women punish themselves this way?

What is the purpose of a shoe?  Aren't main purposes of shoes protecting one’s feet and making it easier to walk and stand. Low-heeled shoes seem much better suited for this.

High-heeled shoes seem to be uncomfortable to wear, unsafe to walk in, inappropriate for driving a car, and potentially cause several problems for your feet over the long term – assuming you don’t fall and suffer a severe accident in the short term wearing them.

Let me make it clear that I am not a medical professional and cannot give any medical advice. But numerous articles either written by medical professionals or quoting medical professionals report on the safety hazards of high-heeled shoes, including one by a Dr. Brooke Gifford posted on Advpodiatric.com.1

Can anyone cite any medical benefit to the average person from wearing high heels? Is there any reason for the average lady to wear high heels other than fashion? Is the desire to look fashionable the big appeal?

I urge women to revolt peacefully against the persons/traditions/forces that lead them to purchase and wear high heel shoes. Why not buy and wear comfortable walking shoes?

Lest you think I am solely concerned about the health risks of high-heeled shoes, I want to make it clear that I also consider men’s ties to be unnecessary and potentially unsafe, as I discussed in a previous Newsvine article.2

I have not worn a tie in years – fortunately my jobs have not required a tie. And I don’t think I’ve ever worn a high heel shoe other than trying one on very briefly! I hope the day will come soon when no employer finds ties or high heels necessary for typical workers.

There are various theories on how high heels originated and why they became popular. You can find numerous articles online about the subject if it interest you. For my purposes here, I find it sufficient to state that I know of no logical reason for modern women to wear them for hours daily while walking, working typical jobs (If your job requires them, you have my sympathy!), driving a car, or relaxing.

As a man, I cannot understand a logical reason to for buying or wearing high heel shoes unless an employer requires it (which seems discriminatory and is hopefully relatively rare). If you know of a reason, please tell me about it. Thanks!

Sorry, but only a man could write something like this...

I don't find them uncomfortable or hard to walk in...I wear them all the time. I love my shoes!

I'll give up my six inch Louboutins when you pry them from my cold dead feet!

That surprises me, sjayne2355. Thanks for your input.

Are you saying you can walk in them as well as you could in walking shoes, for example? If so, is there a knack for it? Other women I've talked to seem to feel differently.

Yes, I can walk in them as well as any shoe...I can run in them if I have to...

I don't know about a "knack" other than strong legs and practice...I've worn heels since I was 13 and got my first pair for my birthday.

My current favorite pair have an 8" heel and I wore them yesterday for about 12 hours and will wear a lower 6" heel today.

I don't mind wearing a decent high heeled shoe on a special dressy occasion, but I refuse to even think of buying any of the ugly, horrible ankle snappers that celebrities are wearing these days. The shoes are skyscrapers, so high that the women's feet slide down in the shoe and their toes hang over the edge. The women who wear heels all the time end up with painful bunions and misshapen feet. I've always taken good care of my feet because I kept in mind that they are going to be carrying me around for a very long time.

That is terrible, Piletre! I wonder why women wear them despite that?

Wonderful!

High heels (and ties) are necessary because appearances matter. It may be an old-fashioned attitude related to "get a haircut and get a real job" but that is the order things go. If you don't get a haircut then you won't get a real job. Appearances do matter. Even if high heels are bad for one's health, then unemployment is bound to be worse.

It's been my experience that jeans and t-shirt jobs come with jeans and t-shirt paychecks. You can argue the fairness of it all, but you cannot deny the reality of it. Anyone in any kind of customer relations (anyone in a front office or field service job) has to look the part of the professional in order to win the hearts and minds (and of course business) of the customers who bring in the big bucks.

Some dress codes make more sense than others, for example hard hats in a construction zone, but all dress codes serve a purpose. If that purpose is one of creating a professional atmosphere to put customers at ease, then that is as valid a purpose as a hard hat rule might be.

I agree, MeanGene-3334839. But I fail to see the purpose of the one requiring high heels.

I have worn heels all my adult life, and always laugh at what a friend of mine says,"The higher the heel the lower the IQ." I'll take my chances, lol. I have no bunions, no sore feet, and have found that they tighten and tone the thighs. They enhance a suit, give a longer look to the legs, accentuate the arches, and put a small hitch in the gittalong. Chiropractors might advise against them for the sake of the spine, but I have no backaches either, so far. Some women will spend a lot of time and money on picking out the right suit or dress or pants outfit, but then completely fail with flat shoes. If you can wear them, do.

I think the quality of the shoe has a lot to do with how your feet feel at the end of the day. I love wearing heels because they make my butt and legs look good, and Im short, so a couple extra inches gets my nose above arm pit height. My knees actually feel better when I wear a 1-2 inch heel than they do if I wear flats. I dont wear anything that has a platform or anything higher than 3 inches. Not because I dont like how they look, but because Im too short to pull that off.

Now there's a visual for us!

I adore shoes, sling backs, peek toes, pumps, ankle straps. Comfort is definitely very important, the style equally so.

I'll offer a resounding affirmation to that statement!

The shoes can be worn with little else too, as they can make even the slightest bit of clothing look great :P

As a keen observer of women (they're fascinating, lovely, and totally mysterious) I noticed a long time ago women love shoes. The average woman has way more shoes than the average man, and also way more than they need. Remember Imelda Marcos? She had somewhere between 1000 to 3000 pairs of shoes. Well there's a little Imelda in all of them.

Why high heels? Who knows - they accentuate this or that or makes them look taller. As men we'll never know the answer to that or to why they always misplace their car keys and cell phones.

One thing that weirds me out is trying to figure out how tall a woman really is. One day tall (in heels), and the next short (in sneakers).

BTW - As a young person in the 70's I did once buy a pair of platform shoes. Did I look ridiculous? Oh yes I did!

I'm 5' tall. When I wore high heels and platforms back in the 1970's, I could actually dance with a tall guy. Without them, I had my face buried in their stomach.

I can't wear heels any more because I have arthritis in my hips and it hurts, but I would wear them again if I could. I like being 5'3" or 5'4", rather than my usual short self... :-)

Guys don't mind if you're short so be yourself - you're beautiful!

Back in the 1970's I once gave in to fashion and bought a pair of platform shoes. I'm a 6 foot 1 inch tall thin guy. Can you picture how ridiculous I looked? Thank God no one got a picture!

Oh, I am my short self... But, it was nice to be able to reach the back 1/2 of the second shelf of my kitchen cabinets, and reach the top of the black board when I was teaching, and reach the edge of the top shelf in the grocery-- for some reason, everything I want at the grocery is on the top shelf, and I'm constantly asking someone to reach something for me...

It was fun, but those days are long gone. :-)

      Nyeh, what is, is!

Oh, but they make you feel so sexy. I am about your height, too, Dowser, so I know the feeling of not being able to reach things.

      jameseg

I wear heels day in and day out with my jeans and are not uncomfortable in them. I even dance in them. Not stilettos, which have their place, but a tall, thicker, wider heel. I have done this for years and my feet are fine.

One the other side of it and to prove part of your argument, I knew a woman who wore stiletto-type high heels when she camped. I used to see her walking her dog all of the time in heels. I asked her how she could walk all over the stones and hills in those heels. She said because of wearing heels so much, she could no longer wear flat shoes.

Heels are fashionable and can also be very sexy.

I do not advocate wearing anything that might do you harm for any longer than necessary to achieve the desired effect....kind of like not advocating that someone wear a parachute unless that someone is in a plane and planning to go skydiving. It's all about the venue and personal taste.....and not about torture or such.

I think I could be happy if I were married to a "shoe Lady"...except we might go broke if both of us were adding to the collection!

Height is not an issue if you love someone. In that case, heels are a "height adjuster" which makes literally "being there" easier.

I appreciate your article and position. And I feel if the Lady is NOT interested in heels the gentleman must accept her decision gracefully.

Theres just nothing like a pair of red, patent leather, sling back, peep toes to transform a conservative suit, little black dress, or your favorite Levi's into a fabulous outfit. When you put on a pair of heels, you "magically" lose 5lbs, your legs and butt look great, and your entire mood improves because you look good and you know it!
