"Teenagers should be barred from tanning salons to help prevent them from getting skin cancer, the American Academy of Pediatrics says,"

as do some other organizations.

I agree with these medical professionals.

I don't understand why teenagers (or adults for that matter) want to spend time, money, and risk their health to get a dark tan.

To me, persons without such a tan are more attractive and these individuals who spend time in tanning booths are exhibiting poor judgment.

Maybe someone can provide me a logical reason for using tanning salons. Even when I'm in the sun I often use a wide-brimmed hat or sunscreen to prevent getting excessive sun.

Please feel free to respectfully post your own views on this.

Hi jameseg - about to seed this and you beat me to it ;).

Maybe someone can provide me a logical reason for using tanning salons. Even when I'm in the sun I often use a wide-brimmed hat or sunscreen to prevent getting excessive sun.

I don't have any logical reason to provide however there are aesthetic reasons why people tan. Also tanning beds are very warm and relaxing - a nice break for those of us who live in Northern colder climates.

That being said; I can't see myself telling people that they can and cannot do to their own bodies. Of course that slippery slope appears again...

Thanks Santino42. I hadn't thought about the "warm and relaxing" aspect. You may have a valid point about freedom of choice, though I think teens especially need some restrictions.

I appreciate your insights!

I agree 100% - especially with some of these programs starring the Kardashian's and/or the Hilton's of today. IMHO the importance they place on appearance is sickening at times and could possible mislead our youth.

I tanned as a teen and occasionally still lay in the sun because it is therapy for my lupus and helps counter the effects on me...yes, it is a legitimate treatment for skin disorders from lupus and pain in the joints...that said..what a person does to their body is their own business..that is the real problem I have with drug laws as well.
