"For many decades now, scientists have noticed an extraordinary link between the ratio of two digits on the hand — the ring and index fingers, known in scientists' jargon as 2D and 4D — and a whole host of seemingly unrelated traits."

This seems very unusual. If it is true, it really is amazing to me.

Very interesting! I've seen mention of this before, with the longer ring finger being positively correlated with the development of arthritis.
Findings like this harken back to the much older notions of body type, with body types once being believed to be related to various personality traits. While this theory is generally seen as dated and without scientific merit by most psychologists and physicians today, findings like this might make us take another look at some of these earlier notions.
Thanks for the article and links!

Thank you, Sydney - 5. Indeed, this could lead to rethinking about a lot of things.

Ok, I just looked at my hands. On one hand, index finger is longer and on the other it is shorter. So, I'm half-way autistic?
lol....

I understand-- I think I'm going to have to read the article again... :-)

Dowser:
I read it again, and I measured again. On my right hand, the one I measured first, the fingers 2 and 4 are exactly the same length from the lowest crease to the tip. ON my left hand the index finger is slightly shorter than the ring finger. I am very strong, and it is true that I can't throw at all. But what about all of that she throws like a girl stuff if a longer index finger is supposed to make you throw better?

Shoo! Don't ask me! I can't throw anything... I miss the trash can on a regular basis, much less put a ball at a point!

Fascinating. I have "male hands." I'm also athletic, was a tomboy and am, umm, assertive.
Interesting that researchers think this is exposure to testosterone in the womb and not a genetic marker.

There is no such thing as a woman having "male" hands or a male having "female" hands. The article suggests a correlation because they seem to coincide; when in reality, most of the correlation is coincidence. Rest assured you have female hands no matter what your finger length or circumference, size of your belly button, or secondary color of your eyes.
There are too many correlations they come up with for a majority of them to not be coincidence. Remember, getting a 50/50 is almost impossible, so when comparing two items (like size of finger/athletic ability), you are bound to see at least 51% in one direction or the other. Then if I tell you that you need bigger hands to be successful at football, then perhaps those with long fingers are NOT better at football, but more likely those who are good at football have larger hands?
It's an elementary interest, like tarot cards and astrological signs, moreso than scientific fact. Open a fortune cookie and enjoy. :)

Hey, Jerry Seinfeld did a show on it... His date had "Man Hands". :-)
I promise I'm not being argumentative! I'm just joshing with ya'!
You know the worst thing about fortune cookies? I opened one right after I had a heart attack and guess what-- there was no fortune. EGAD, that wasn't a 'sign' I needed! lol!
@justice:
From Reuters - this isn't a "51%" guess as you intimated in your post:
Researchers at Britain's Warwick University and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) found that men whose index finger is longer than their ring finger were one-third less likely to develop the disease than men with the opposite pattern of finger lengths.
"Relative finger length could be used as a simple test for prostate cancer risk, particularly in men aged under 60," said Ros Eeles from the ICR, who helped lead the study.
She said the finding, which the scientists believe may be related to levels of the male hormone testosterone, could be used in combination with other factors such as family history or genetic testing to select at-risk men for screening.

One third less likely to develop the disease (meaning 2/3 are just as likely or more likely)....The math on that isn't convincing enough for me to say that it is a viable method to rely on. I'll get the test the old fashioned way. And that is only one of the many items they correlated.
While it would be nice to think you could fend off cancer by measuring your finger, I think it is also nice to know "I will be soon receive a message from an old friend." I don't rely on it, but hey, an old friend could call, right?

That's NOT what the research OR the researcher said.

You are correct Kathy in that they did not say it would prevent it, only a viable test for it. I said 50% is not reliable, so you showed me research that that was 67% unreliable as proof. I'm trying to point out that it is not conclusive at 50%...however, your example was even less conclusive at 33%. 67% were either just as likely or more likely. What if 33% were more likely, 33% were less likely and 33% were just as likely? That would sound pretty coincidental.
I do apologize. I didn't mean to argue with one about stats on the size of a finger to identify cancer. That would just be silly.

There was an interesting documentary on TV once about "gender and the brain" and they talked about this.
They had an expert in this information study the hands of five different men who were all athletes (without seeing them, only their hand). He was able to correctly determine who would win a 100 yard dash in order (1st through 5th place). It was pretty interesting.

Such things amaze me, weRdoomed!
I do look forward to more research on this -- and more publicity for it if it is supported by research, as it seems to be, based on my limited reading.
Thanks to everyone for your input!

I think maybe one shouldn't take the masculine or male hand thing too literally. My ring finger is longer than my index finger, but I don't think anyone would call my hands "masculine" looking. They're graceful and slender, with a size 4 ring finger. I get told a lot that I have artistic or aristocratic looking hands. Don't know about that, but whatever they are, they're definitely feminine looking.
On the other hand, (pun intended) I was a major tomboy as a kid, very rough and tumble, and I throw really well.

Good for you! :-)
I wear a size 5 ring-- how on earth do you find rings? I'm amazed!
- 2 votes
Not bad! I bet you can find all sorts!
When we bought our wedding rings, mine is set with a band of diamonds, and I had to sign a waiver that I wouldn't sue if the diamonds fell out when they sized it. ;-)
- 1 vote
Dowser,
My left ring finger is actually about a 4 to 4 1/4, depending on the width of the band. My right ring finger is about a 4 1/2. It's maddening. So hard to find a ring for an adult in less than a five.
My wedding band and another one I wear with it I've had sized. The ones for my right hand spin. So I've taken to buying rings for my index and middle fingers in 6, and they tend to spin, too, especially on my left hand.
I wish the rest of me was this skinny...Wait. No, I don't. I'd look like Olive Oil. :)

My rings rotate, too... but I think it is because arthur has swollen my knuckles and made my finger part skinnier. Arthur is such a nasty beast!
Got your email and thanks-- will reply soon!

jameseg, This is an interesting concept, but I'm not sure what it means for me. My digits seem to measure the same on both hands. I am not very athletic, but in my day, girls didn't do that, so it could be lack of practice. There was a time that I could throw a ball and be somewhat accurate, after some practice, and instructions by my former husband. However that was many years ago, when I was much much younger.
I liked Dowser's comment about trying to hit the waste basket, as it is sure shot, if I'm standing over it. I guess I wouldn't attempt it from far away, as I am the one who would have to bend over and pick it up if I missed. That in itself is not as easy as was back then.
Therefore I am wondering if these statistics and research would change with age.
Interesting, never the less, as we all are getting the measuring tape out to check out our particular traits.

It would be interesting to see how age affects the results, dawnypawny!
Thanks to you and everyone for your insights!

Interestingly, I relayed this info to my husband, and we looked at his hands, as well. He is six years younger than me, and I am sure much stronger than me. However, he cannot hit the laundry basket, with his throws, which is less that two feet away.
As far as hitting the trash can, I am not sure if he can find it, as I go through the house and pick up his trash, and place in the can. All in fun, but it may be more in practice than in the length of the fingers. Again, arthritis may change the cause and effect. Or perhaps it is a mindset and desire to meet the standards of the measurements.
Athletic ability may change with age, but to tell the truth, I couldn't throw a softball when I was sixteen, which now has been a couple of years. lol

Hmmmm, I'm a female with a longer index finger than ring finger. So, I'm:
- Schizophrenic (SHUT UP, THEY ARE NOT IMAGINARY FRIENDS!!! THEY'RE REAL! REAL!).
- A lesbian at the top of the corporate ladder! Woo-hoo! I love sleeping in my piles of money with beautiful women!
- Aggressive and good with weapons. *smile*
I like studies like this. :D
